DTS Sound Unbound puts DTS Headphone:X spatial audio on whatever headphones you already own.

The app installs free and the Headphone:X licence it unlocks is a one-time purchase once the trial runs out.

It is up against Dolby Access and against Windows Sonic, which is already on your machine and costs nothing, so choosing between the three is the first real decision here.

What DTS Headphone:X Actually Does

A 5.1 or 7.1 soundtrack expects six or eight speakers placed around a room. Headphone:X folds that layout into the two speakers you are actually wearing, keeping the direction each sound came from.

The result is placement rather than volume: footsteps read as behind you, rain reads as above you, instead of simply arriving louder in one ear.

It also carries an equalizer and separate profiles for games, films and music, each with its own frequency curve and its own amount of virtualization, so you are not stuck with one setting across everything.

Be realistic about the hardware. On a budget gaming headset the gap between this and free Windows Sonic is small; on open-back headphones or anything running through a headphone amplifier it is obvious, particularly on music.

Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos or DTS

Which Build Do You Need

Most people should install from the Microsoft Store, which handles all of this without being asked. The offline package here is for machines where the Store is removed, blocked or broken.

That package carries three complete builds inside it - 64-bit Intel and AMD, 32-bit Intel and AMD, and ARM64 for Snapdragon laptops. There is no wrong one to pick and no architecture error to run into, which is worth knowing if you have already tried the offline Dolby Access package and found it installs on ARM64 machines only.

It asks for Windows 10 build 18362 - that is version 1903, from 2019 - or anything newer, on all three builds. Windows 11 is fine and so is a fully updated Windows 10.

The 535MB download surprises people. Only one of those three builds ends up on your disk, roughly 172MB of it, and Windows discards the rest as it installs.

Installing the Offline Package by Hand

This is a Store package rather than an ordinary installer, so double-clicking it does not always work. The reliable route is PowerShell and the Add-AppxPackage command.

It needs three Microsoft framework packages in place first. A machine with a working Store almost always has them; LTSC and N editions often do not.

• Microsoft.VCLibs.140.00, version 14.0.33519.0 or newer

Each framework package has to match your processor - the x64 framework for a 64-bit PC, and so on. The app bundle itself does not, because it already contains all three.

1. Put everything in one folder. The DTS bundle and the three framework packages together.
2. Open PowerShell as administrator. Then change into that folder.
3. Run Add-AppxPackage against the bundle. Pass the framework files to the -DependencyPath option.
4. Open DTS Sound Unbound from the Start menu. Sign in with a Microsoft account to start the trial.

Windows ignores any framework package it already has, so listing all three is safe. It is the same PowerShell method the HEVC extensions use, and it behaves the same way here.

Turning It On

1. Right-click the speaker icon in the Windows taskbar.
2. Open the spatial sound menu and choose DTS Sound Unbound.
3. Play something you know well and listen for height and rear placement before you judge it.

If you move between headphones and speakers often, SoundSwitch saves you the trip through that menu every time. Onboard audio feeds the whole chain, so keep it current with Realtek HD Audio Codecs if your motherboard uses Realtek.

Feeding It Clean Audio

DTS Sound Unbound only handles the last step, the spatial render. It can only work with what your player hands it.

For local files, PotPlayer, MPC-BE and MPC-HC all follow the Windows spatial sound setting without extra configuration.

Blu-ray rips and MKV files with DTS-HD or TrueHD tracks need a decoder that does not quietly fold them to stereo first. LAV Filters is the one to use, and the K-Lite Codec Pack bundles it with a pre-configured player if you would rather not set anything up.

For standalone .dts and .ac3 files, the DTS/AC3/DD+ Source Filter lets any DirectShow player open them at all.

For music, foobar2000 passes audio through the Windows stack without colouring it, which is what you want underneath a processing layer like this one.

Is It Better Than the Free Alternatives?

For positioning in games, DTS and Dolby are close enough that preference decides it, and both are a step up from Windows Sonic.

For music and physical media, DTS handles dynamic range better to most ears, which is why it tends to win with people using open-back headphones rather than a headset.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

If your spatial sound menu already offers a home theatre option, your receiver or soundbar is doing this over HDMI and a headphone licence adds nothing to that path.

If you listen mainly through laptop speakers, the effect is small and the money is better spent on headphones. Windows Sonic is free and plenty for casual viewing.
