MPC-HC is the small, fast Windows video player that people keep coming back to after trying the heavier options.

It opens instantly, uses very little memory, and plays almost anything without a codec pack.

Version 2.7.4 arrived on 20 July 2026, and it changes something that will be visible the first time you launch it.

Yes, It Is Still Maintained

This is the first thing worth clearing up, because plenty of pages elsewhere still say MPC-HC is dead.

The original MPC-HC project did shut down in July 2017. Shortly after, a developer known as clsid2 picked it up and has maintained it on GitHub ever since, shipping releases every few weeks.

That is the version on this page. It is the continuation of Gabest's original Media Player Classic, and it is genuinely current rather than an archive copy.

What Actually Changed In 2.7.4

The headline change is the video renderer, and it matters more than it sounds.

A renderer is the part of the player that draws the picture on your screen. MPC-HC previously defaulted to an older one called EVR-CP, which got the colours wrong on HDR video unless you knew to change it.

As of 2.7.4, MPC Video Renderer is the default on most systems. It handles HDR properly and supports Dolby Vision, and the player now checks your graphics card once after updating and adjusts the renderer and hardware decoding settings for you.

• LAV Filters updated to 0.82-4, which is the component doing the actual decoding.
• One-time GPU detection after updating, which adjusts renderer and hardware decoding automatically.
• The playback timer can now sit next to the seekbar instead of in the status bar.
• A new customisable viewing preset on hotkey 4, which hides the menu and status bar.
• An advanced option to set which viewing preset the player starts in.
• A playlist context-menu submenu for moving the playlist around.
• A few crash fixes and small improvements.

If you are upgrading from an older build and the picture suddenly looks different, that is the renderer change doing its job rather than something going wrong.

What It Plays Without Any Extra Setup

MPC-HC bundles LAV Filters, so the modern formats work on a clean install with nothing added.

That covers H.264, HEVC/H.265, AV1, VP9 and MPEG-2 on the video side, and AAC, AC3, E-AC3, DTS, DTS-HD, TrueHD, FLAC and Opus for audio. HDR10 and Dolby Vision are handled by the renderer.

Hardware decoding is supported through your graphics card, which is what keeps 4K playback smooth on modest machines rather than pinning the processor.

Features Worth Knowing About

MPC-HC has quietly accumulated a lot in recent years, and most people never find any of it.

There is a dark theme, a customisable toolbar, video thumbnails when you hover the seekbar, playback speed control with automatic pitch correction, A-B looping to repeat a section, and resume-from-where-you-left-off across sessions.

It also plays Blu-ray discs, though not disc menus, and it can search for and download subtitles directly.

The Installer Is Deliberately Basic

Worth setting expectations here, because the developer says so himself and has no plans to change it.

MPC-HC's installer does the minimum. It will not set up file associations for you, configure subtitle languages, or tune the renderer beyond the new GPU check.

If you want that handled, the K-Lite Codec Pack bundles MPC-HC with a far more capable installer that configures associations, subtitle preferences, hardware decoding and HDR support during setup. The developer recommends it directly, which is unusual and worth taking seriously.

The Standard version suits most people. The Mega version adds encoding tools and madVR for anyone who wants them.

MPC-HC Or MPC-BE

These two get compared constantly and both descend from the same original player.

MPC-HC stays closer to the original in weight and layout, and is the more conservative pick. MPC-BE is the feature-forward fork, with more built in out of the box and a more modern interface.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

MPC-HC is Windows only. There is no Mac or Linux version, and there is no plan for one.

If you want a player that works identically across platforms with nothing to configure, VLC Media Player is the standard answer. It is heavier on the processor for the same file, but it asks nothing of you.

The tell for MPC-HC being the wrong fit is simple: if you find yourself in the options pages feeling lost rather than curious, a player with fewer decisions will serve you better.

PotPlayer and KMPlayer sit in similar territory with more built in out of the box.
