This discontinued codec was last updated in April 2014 and remains the final official release from Microsoft for legacy Windows systems.
For Windows 10 and later, Microsoft replaced this entirely with the Raw Image Extension, which is now the supported solution for viewing RAW image formats.

Legacy Software for Older Windows Systems
Users running Windows 8.1, Windows 7, or earlier Windows versions can still use this final codec release to view RAW images from professional cameras.
Without it, these older Windows systems cannot display thumbnails or preview RAW files from Canon, Casio, Epson, Fujifilm, Kodak, Kodak Minolta, Leica, Nikon, Olypmus, Panasonic, Pentax, Samsung and Sony, and other camera manufacturers.
Discontinued but Functional:
While Microsoft discontinued development in 2014, the codec pack still functions on supported legacy Windows versions. It integrates with Windows Imaging Codecs (WIC) on these older systems, providing basic RAW viewing capabilities.
Limited Camera Support:
The codec supports RAW formats available as of 2014, including Canon (CR2), Nikon (NEF), Sony (ARW), Olympus (ORF), Pentax (PEF), and Panasonic (RW2).
However, cameras released after 2014 may not be fully supported due to the discontinued development.
Windows Live Photo Gallery Integration:
The codec enables RAW support in Windows Live Photo Gallery, allowing basic viewing and organization of RAW files within Microsoft's legacy photo management application, also discontinued.
Legacy System Requirements
Microsoft Camera Codec Pack 6.3 works with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1.
Installation requires administrative privileges and a system restart to activate RAW file support.
Modern Alternative Recommended
For users who can upgrade, Windows 10 and later versions include native RAW support through the Raw Image Extension.
This modern approach provides better performance, broader format support, and ongoing updates that the discontinued codec pack cannot offer.
The legacy codec pack should only be used when running older Windows versions that cannot be upgraded to Windows 10 or later.
