YV12 is a planar Y'CbCr 4:2:0 image format used as an intermediate format by other codecs.
End users usually need codecs for playback, which it is not the case of the YV12 QuickTime Codec.
Instead, image processing techniques have a lot more to benefit from the compression method used by this codec; for each image, luma data for all pixels is stored consecutively, followed by the chroma data.
This codec is available for both Windows and Mac OS X platforms and its requirements include QuickTime 7.0 or later.
Its components are an image decompressor, an image compressor, a movie importer and a movie exporter.
