Shotcut is a free, open-source video editor for Windows that handles everything from a quick trim to a multi-track project.

It opens almost any video, audio or image file straight away, with no import step and no extra codecs to install.

Version 26.9.27 arrived on 28 September 2026, with no watermark, no account and no paid tier.

What Shotcut Actually Does

You drag clips onto a timeline, cut them, stack video and audio tracks, add filters and transitions, and export. Clips with different resolutions and frame rates can sit side by side in one project.

• Editing - multi-track timeline, ripple edits, markers and three-point editing.
• Filters - crop, blur, stabilise, colour wheels, keyframe animation and motion tracking.
• Audio - per-track volume, noise reduction and VST plugins.
• Subtitles - write, import or burn them in, with speech-to-text built on Whisper.

What Is New in 26.9

Timeline track headers now have their own volume control and level meter, so the timeline works like a small mixing desk. Automatic ducking lowers your music whenever someone speaks.

A new Adjustment Clip applies its filters to every track below it, handy for a colour grade over a whole scene. Audio now stays in 32-bit float for cleaner sound, and the built-in FFmpeg moved to version 9.0.

Version 26.9.27 also closes security holes in the update and Whisper downloads, and fixes subtitle import on Windows.

Which Download to Pick

The download page has the 64-bit installer, a portable zip and a build for Windows on ARM. Shotcut needs 64-bit Windows 10 or 11.

Exporting Your Video

Export presets cover YouTube, H.264, HEVC, AV1, WebM and lossless formats. Turn on hardware encoding in Export, Advanced, and your graphics card does the work much faster.

Check the finished file in VLC Media Player, or install the K-Lite Codec Pack so Windows apps can play the same formats.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

To cut a recording without touching quality, LosslessCut finishes in seconds. For professional colour grading and effects, DaVinci Resolve goes much further.

Prefer a different layout? Kdenlive and OpenShot are free and open source too.

For social clips with templates and auto captions, CapCut is quicker, and recording your screen first is a job for OBS Studio.
