EAC3, also written E-AC-3 and sold as Dolby Digital Plus, is the audio on a great many streaming rips and Blu-ray remuxes.

It is licensed, so some players leave the decoder out rather than pay for it.

Short answer. Install VLC for Android - it decodes EAC3 with no add-on, no settings and no version matching.

VLC for Android - the one to install

VLC carries its own decoders for effectively every format in circulation, EAC3 included. There is no add-on to find, nothing to match against an app version, and nothing to reload after an update.

It also covers AC3, DTS and TrueHD in the same breath, so the whole family of "no sound" problems disappears at once.

The interface is plainer than MX Player's and the gesture controls are less refined. That is the trade, and for most people it is worth it.

Kodi - if you want a media centre

Kodi handles EAC3 natively and is built for organising a library across a TV box or a spare device.

It is far heavier than a plain video player, so it is the wrong answer if you only want one file to work tonight.

One caveat on the Android build. The current Android release is an alpha, so treat it as something to experiment with rather than the fix you rely on.

PotPlayer - Windows only

PotPlayer decodes EAC3 without extra codecs and is excellent on a PC, with GPU acceleration and deep playback controls.

There is no Android version and there never has been, so it is only relevant if the file that will not play is on your computer.

KMPlayer - the one to skip on a modern phone

KMPlayer is widely recommended for EAC3 and that advice is out of date, so it is worth being specific about why.

KMPlayer does not decode EAC3 on its own. It needs an external codec file, and that file only ever existed as a 32-bit ARM build.

No 64-bit version was ever released. Virtually every Android phone and tablet made since 2016 is 64-bit, so on a modern device the add-on simply will not load and there is no workaround.
