KMPlayer for Android is PANDORA.TV's video player for phones and tablets, and it has been one of the better-known ones for years.
It plays a wide range of formats, handles subtitles better than most, and streams from a network share or a cloud account.
The app installs free, and a VIP subscription sits behind the editing and conversion tools, so it is worth knowing which side of that line the feature you came for falls on.
What It Actually Does Well
The core playback is solid and needs no configuration. Swipe gestures handle volume, brightness and seeking, playback speed is adjustable, and a section-repeat control loops a chosen A to B range, which is genuinely useful for language practice or learning a piece of music.
Beyond the basics it carries a per-file bookmark system, separate saved equalizers for music and video, and colour controls covering brightness, hue, saturation and gamma. A floating window keeps a video playing over other apps, background audio continues with the screen off, and Chromecast support sends playback to a TV.
If gesture controls are the main draw, MX Player covers similar ground and is worth comparing.
Formats and Subtitles
On the video and audio side the vendor lists MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, RMVB, TS, MPG, FLV, M4V and 3GP, alongside MP3, WAV, AAC and FLAC. HEVC playback is supported, and URL playback lets you paste a stream address directly.
Subtitles are where it quietly beats most rivals. It reads SAMI with ruby tags, SubRip, SSA and ASS with full styling, VobSub, MicroDVD, SubViewer, MPL2, TMPlayer, PJS, WebVTT, Teletext and subtitle tracks lifted from DVD and DVB sources.
Timing, colour, size and position are all adjustable during playback, so an out-of-sync subtitle file can be nudged back into place without stopping the video.
Streaming From a Network or Cloud
Files do not have to live on the device. The player connects over FTP, UPnP, SMB and WebDAV, which covers most home NAS boxes and shared folders on a PC.
For cloud storage it supports Dropbox and OneDrive, streaming rather than downloading first. If your library is large and lives on a machine elsewhere in the house, Kodi for Android is built around that use and worth a look.
What Costs Money
The player is free, the extras are not. Playback, subtitles, casting, network streaming and the floating window are all included with no payment and no account.
KMPlayer VIP is an in-app subscription, and it covers the built-in torrent client, cutting video and audio, creating GIFs, converting audio to MP3 and the custom themes. The free trial is limited to one per Google Play account and renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least a day before it ends.
If clip editing is the reason you are here rather than playback, a dedicated free editor such as CapCut for Android will do more for nothing.
Fixing EAC3 Codec Errors
A video that plays with a picture but no sound is almost always an EAC3 audio track that KMPlayer cannot decode on its own.
The add-on that fixes it is the KMPlayer Custom Codec, and whether it can help depends entirely on your device. It is a 32-bit ARM build, so on a 64-bit phone, which is effectively everything sold since 2016, it will not load and the error comes straight back.

Who Should Look Elsewhere
The tell is your folder count. KMPlayer scans the whole device to build its library, and on phones holding many thousands of folders that scan can run for hours and restarts if the app is sent to the background, which makes the player effectively unusable until it finishes.
Open your file manager and look at how much is on the device before installing. If it is a working phone with a deep folder tree, BSPlayer for Android is lighter and gets to the file faster.
