ffWorks is a paid FFmpeg front end for macOS from ffworks.net that converts, trims, merges, colour-grades and batch-encodes video to HEVC, AV1, ProRes and H.266 without the command line, sold as a one-time purchase with a free trial.
ffWorks puts a proper Mac interface on top of FFmpeg, the command-line engine that most video software runs underneath, so you can convert, compress, trim, merge and colour-grade video without typing a single command.
It is a paid app with a free trial - a one-time purchase of 22 euros unlocks it - and it needs a separate FFmpeg build installed before it will encode anything.
Version 5.3 is the current release, built for macOS 26 and already prepared for macOS 27, with native support for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
What ffWorks Actually Does
At its simplest, ffWorks is a converter: drop a file on it, pick a preset for an iPhone, Apple TV, YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok or a games console, and it hands FFmpeg the right command. Presets for the iPhone 15 through 17 now encode in HEVC, the format those phones record in natively.
Drop zones take that a step further. You create as many as you like, each tied to a preset, and any file dropped onto a zone is processed with those settings, up to eight files at once.
Under the presets sit more than 450 advanced FFmpeg options and over 60 video filters - watermarks, timecode, padding and cropping, rotation, stabilisation, sharpening, deinterlacing and the rest. Beginners never have to see them; experts can reach all of them.
Hardware encoding: through Apple VideoToolbox, ffWorks encodes to H.264, HEVC and ProRes on the Mac's own media engine, which is several times faster than software encoding on an Apple Silicon machine.
The Tools Beyond Converting
Colour Adjustments cover exposure, contrast, saturation, gamma, vibrance, shadows and white balance, with a colour curve editor and more than 80 professional LUT presets, including an HDR to SDR conversion.
Cropping works three ways: by hand, automatically, or by detecting and removing black borders. Overlays let you place a logo or a second movie as picture-in-picture, resize it and move it anywhere on the frame.
Two analysis tools are worth knowing about before you commit to a setting. The Video Bitrate Analyser charts how much data a file uses second by second, and the quality metrics panel scores a converted file against its source using VMAF, PSNR, SSIM and CAMBI, so you can see whether a smaller file actually looks worse.
It also merges clips into one file, burns in or attaches subtitles, adds chapters to MP4, MOV and MKV, turns image sequences into video and video into image sequences, and builds a thumbnail contact sheet of a whole movie in one picture.
You Need FFmpeg First
ffWorks ships without FFmpeg inside it, and this catches almost everyone on first launch. The app is the interface; the encoding engine is a separate download that you point ffWorks at once.
The developer recommends three ready-made macOS builds, and any of them works:
- OSXExperts FFmpeg - builds for both Apple Silicon and Intel.
- Martin Riedl's FFmpeg builds - also universal, updated frequently.
- Evermeet FFmpeg - Intel only, so skip it on an M-series Mac.
Newer FFmpeg builds: earlier 5.x releases could fail when encoding to MP4 or MOV with a recent FFmpeg version. That was fixed in 5.2.1, so if you see that error, update ffWorks before you downgrade FFmpeg.
Which Formats It Handles
Because FFmpeg does the decoding and encoding, ffWorks reads and writes whatever your FFmpeg build supports, which in practice is almost everything: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, MXF, MPEG-TS, VOB, GIF and more on the container side.
On the codec side that means H.264, HEVC, AV1, VP8 and VP9, ProRes, DNxHD, Theora, and now H.266 VVC through the VVenC encoder into MOV and MKV containers. Audio covers AAC, MP3, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, Opus and Vorbis, and audio channel mapping works with 7.1 sources as well as stereo and 5.1.

Mac Requirements and the Intel Question
The current 5.3 build is a universal app that runs natively on Apple Silicon and Intel. The developer has said this is changing: future releases will ship as separate Apple Silicon and Intel downloads, and 5.3 includes the groundwork for that split.
Intel Macs are not being dropped - the Intel build will simply be a separate file. The developer's own page still lists macOS 10.11 as the floor, but 4.7.1 is described as the last version for macOS 10.11 through 15, so treat macOS 11 or later as the realistic requirement for 5.x.
If you are on an older system, the download page also carries ffWorks 4.7.1, which works up to macOS 15 but not correctly on macOS 26.
What Changed in ffWorks 5.3
Version 5.3 is mostly under-the-hood work, and the visible changes are about speed and the coming Intel split.
- Ready for macOS 27.
- Database handling has been rewritten and is much faster.
- The update process has been rewritten to handle separate Apple Silicon and Intel binaries.
- Trimming thumbnails cache better, so scrubbing through a clip feels smoother.
- Colour Adjustment handling and the Detail View have both been improved.
- Groundwork for Apple Silicon-only and Intel-only app files, as universal binaries are being retired.
The 5.2.1 release just before it, from August 2026, carried the longer list of user-facing fixes and additions:
- VVenC H.266 encoding into MOV and MKV, and a single-frame mode for the AOM AV1 encoder.
- Audio channel mapping for 7.1 sources, and iPhone 15 to 17 presets switched to HEVC.
- Rewritten command-line building for video and audio filters, faster merging, and a more accurate real-time average in the Bitrate Analyser.
- Better picture-in-picture overlays and more vibrant HDR to SDR LUT output.
- Trimming: hold the mouse button for three seconds to zoom in to frame-by-frame accuracy, and Set to aspect ratio now keeps focus while cropping by hand.
- Fixes for the Thumbnail Contact Sheet settings not saving, MP4/MOV encoding failing with newer FFmpeg builds, a memory leak in Colour Adjustments, auto padding to 4:3 from non-16:9 sources, and a 5.2 regression when exporting user presets.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
The tell is simple: if all you ever do is turn one file into an MP4 that plays on your phone, you will not use enough of ffWorks to justify paying for it. HandBrake does that for free, and Shotcut for Mac adds a free timeline editor with FFmpeg export underneath.

Where It Fits on a Mac
ffWorks sits in the middle of a typical Mac media chain. Files arrive from a camera, a video downloader or a screen recording in OBS Studio for Mac, and ffWorks turns them into whatever the destination needs.
