Somebody typed a Cloudflare error code into Google, and ended up here - which is a fairly precise description of what using makemkv.com has been like lately.
MakeMKV is one of the most-downloaded disc rippers in the world, and its website falls over often enough that people search for its downtime by name.
We can see it happening, because those searches land on us.
Here is what the errors mean, why nothing you do will clear them, and how to get the program while the site is unreachable.
What People Are Actually Searching For
Our search data for the last three months contains a small, strange cluster of queries alongside the usual ones.
- Straightforward checks - makemkv down, makemkv website down, is makemkv down?
- A raw Cloudflare error code, http error 525, typed into Google by someone who just wanted the program.
- And a couple that are almost plaintive - give me another site, please take me to the site.
Those last two are the whole story in five words each. Somebody wanted a disc ripper, hit a wall, and started asking a search engine for a way round it.
For what it is worth, makemkv.com did not respond to our own automated requests on 9, 11 or 12 August 2026.
What a Cloudflare 5xx Error Actually Means
The site sits behind Cloudflare, and the errors it produces fall in the 520 to 527 range. Every one of those is what Cloudflare calls an origin error.
In plain terms: Cloudflare itself is up and answering, but it cannot get a usable response out of the server sitting behind it. You are talking to the doorman, and nobody is answering the intercom.
Error 525 specifically.
It means the encrypted handshake between Cloudflare and the origin server failed. That conversation happens entirely between two machines you have no part in, which is why clearing your cache, changing browser, restarting your router or switching a VPN on and off will all fail in exactly the same way.
This matters because the internet's standard advice for a broken page is to try those things. Here they are guaranteed not to work, and knowing that saves you twenty minutes.
There is no status page and no announcement channel, so there is also no way to find out how long it will last. In practice these outages have tended to clear within a few hours.
The Part That Catches People Out: the Key Goes Down Too
MakeMKV's free beta key is not published on the download page. It lives in a thread on the developer's forum.
That forum runs on the same infrastructure as the main site, so an outage usually takes both down together. If your build has just expired and you went looking for a fresh key, you will find the site down and the key unreachable at the same moment.
This is the case we keep a copy for.
Our beta key page mirrors that forum thread, so the current key is readable whether or not the developer's server is answering.
How to Get MakeMKV While the Site Is Down
If you can wait a few hours, waiting is the cleanest answer, and makemkv.com is always the right first stop once it is back.
If you cannot, we host the developer's own installer, unmodified and virus-checked: our Windows mirror and our Mac mirror.
Version details for each build sit on the MakeMKV for Windows and MakeMKV for Mac pages, so you can check what you are getting before you get it.
What not to do while you are locked out.
An outage is exactly when people accept a download from wherever will give them one. Skip anything offering a key generator, a patch, or a small launcher that fetches the real file afterwards - the public beta key is free and covers everything, so there is nothing for a crack to unlock.
If you would rather not depend on one small site at all, AnyDVD and DVDFab HD Decrypter are the maintained commercial options on Windows.
Mac DVDRipper Pro covers the same ground on macOS, and the Media Backup category lists the rest.
Once a rip is finished, HandBrake shrinks it and MKVToolNix tidies the tracks inside it.
Quick questions
Is makemkv.com down, or is it just me?
If you are seeing a Cloudflare error numbered between 520 and 527, it is the site. Those errors are generated when Cloudflare cannot reach the server behind it, so every visitor sees the same thing.
How long do these outages last?
There is no status page, so there is no official answer. In practice they have tended to resolve within a few hours.
Can I still get the beta key while the site is down?
Not from the forum, which usually goes down with it. Our beta key page keeps a copy for exactly this situation.
Will clearing my cache or using a VPN help?
No. The failure is between Cloudflare and the origin server, so nothing you change on your own machine or connection affects it.
Is the copy on your mirror the same file?
Yes - the developer's own installer, unchanged. You can confirm it by the filename and size, and by the version MakeMKV reports under Help once it is running. The Codec Finder will tell you what is inside anything you rip with it afterwards.
