Adobe Lightroom 11.3.1 brings desktop-class photo editing to your Android phone - exposure curves, RAW processing, AI Masking, and Creative Cloud sync, all on a touch interface tuned for mobile.

The catch most pages won't tell you upfront: a meaningful chunk of the app is gated behind Lightroom Premium.

This guide shows you what stays free, what unlocks with payment, and where free competitors close the gap.

What You Get for Free on Adobe Lightroom for Android

Install the APK, sign in with a free Adobe ID, and you immediately get access to a serious editing toolkit at no cost.

Core editing controls. All the basics work without payment - exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, temperature, tint, vibrance, and saturation. The tone curve is included in the free tier. You also get crop, rotate, perspective straightening, and a healthy library of free filter-style presets.

RAW photo support. This is the standout free feature. Lightroom for Android imports and edits RAW files directly from your phone or from a connected camera (via USB-C card reader on supported devices). DNG, CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, RAF, ORF, and most other camera RAW formats are supported.

If you shoot in RAW on your phone's pro camera mode, Lightroom processes those files at full quality.

For the desktop side of the same workflow, the Raw Image Extension adds matching RAW thumbnails and previews to Windows Explorer.

Basic export. JPEG export at full resolution is free. You can save edits to your camera roll, share to social, or send to other apps without restriction.

One device, local storage. As long as you keep your photos on your device and don't need cloud sync across phone, tablet, and desktop, Lightroom mobile remains usable indefinitely without paying.

What Lightroom Premium Costs (and What It Unlocks)

Lightroom Premium is bundled with Adobe's Creative Cloud Photography Plan, which runs roughly $9.99/month at the entry tier. Here's what unlocks once you subscribe.

Cloud sync across devices. Your edits and originals sync between Lightroom Mobile, Lightroom Desktop, and the web. Without Premium, every device is an island.

AI Masking and Adaptive Presets. The smart-select tools that automatically detect skies, subjects, backgrounds, and faces require Premium. Free users get manual brush masking only.

Advanced healing brush. Free users get a basic spot remover. Premium unlocks the content-aware healing tool that handles power lines, sensor dust, and unwanted objects far more cleanly.

Geometry tools, selective color, and color grading wheels. The full color grading interface and lens-corrections geometry panel are Premium-only.

Premium presets and community presets. A large library of preset packs is locked behind the subscription.

Higher resolution exports and RAW DNG export. Free export tops out at high-quality JPEG. RAW DNG export and uncompressed TIFF require Premium.

If your editing rarely strays beyond curves, presets, and basic masking, the free tier holds up. If you want AI Masking, healing, and cross-device sync, Premium is the only path inside Lightroom itself.

Free Alternatives Worth Installing on Android

If the Premium paywall doesn't fit your budget, the Android ecosystem has serious free competitors that overlap most of Lightroom's free-tier features and some Premium-tier ones.

Hypic Photo Editor is the closest free competitor on Android. It includes AI-driven background removal and replacement, retouching tools, hundreds of filters, and AI art generation - all free, no subscription. The dedicated guide on how to blur or remove backgrounds with Hypic walks through the AI cutout workflow that Lightroom puts behind Premium.

For shooters who also capture video, Blackmagic Camera for Android turns supported phones into broadcast-grade capture devices and pairs naturally with Lightroom for stills selected from video grabs.

And if your work flows from photo edits into short-form video, CapCut for Android covers cutting and effects without a subscription.

Desktop Companion Options

Lightroom for Android is most useful when synced to a desktop counterpart. If you're already paying for the Photography Plan, Lightroom Desktop is part of the same subscription. If you'd rather avoid the subscription entirely, two free open-source desktop editors handle the same RAW workload:

darktable is the most direct Lightroom desktop replacement - non-destructive editing, full RAW support across 400+ camera models, and advanced masking, all free.

RawTherapee is the other major free RAW processor, with extensive demosaic algorithms and tone-mapping options. Both run on Windows 10/11, macOS, and Linux. For the broader free editing toolkit, the Graphics Tools collection lists every supported option.

System Requirements and Install Notes

Android 8.0 or newer, ARM64-v8a or armeabi-v7a, roughly 124 MB install size, and at least 3 GB RAM recommended for smooth RAW editing.

Permissions: storage (for photo access), camera (for in-app capture), and optional location (for geotag display). The APK is the standard Adobe build redistributed without modification.

To install: download the Adobe Lightroom APK, allow installs from unknown sources for your browser if prompted, tap the file, and confirm. Sign in with a free Adobe ID to unlock the full free tier. You can use Lightroom indefinitely without a paid subscription if you stick to single-device, local-storage editing.

Verdict

Adobe Lightroom for Android is the strongest mobile RAW editor available, but only if you understand what's actually free. Curves, presets, RAW import, and basic export are all free and genuinely good.

AI Masking, healing, sync, and color grading wheels need a subscription.

If those Premium features matter to your workflow, the Photography Plan is worth it. If they don't, install Lightroom for the free tier and keep Hypic installed alongside it for the AI features Lightroom locks behind payment.
