VLC Media Player 3.0.23

A video file that refuses to play in Windows Media Player is one of the most common frustrations on any Windows PC.

VLC Media Player solves it permanently - no codec packs to hunt down, no error messages to decode, no configuration required. Drop the file on the player and it plays.

Why VLC Handles What Windows Media Player Can't

Windows Media Player relies on DirectShow filters installed on your system. If the right decoder is missing, playback fails.

VLC bypasses that entire dependency chain by bundling its own decoders internally.

MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, WMV, HEVC, VP9, AV1, FLAC - over 200 formats play without touching your system codec configuration.

This matters most for HEVC/H.265 content, which Windows requires a paid or manufacturer extension to play natively.

VLC handles HEVC for free, including 4K files, with hardware acceleration routing decoding to your GPU for smooth playback on modest hardware.

AV1 and VP9 - the codecs behind YouTube and modern streaming platforms - also play without additional installs.

What VLC Does Beyond Playback

VLC is not just a player. It converts files between formats, streams content over local networks and the internet, records desktop audio, applies real-time video filters, and handles DVD and Blu-ray disc playback.

The built-in converter makes it a lightweight alternative to dedicated tools like HandBrake for quick format changes.

For online video workflows, VLC can extract audio from video files or save streams directly to disk - useful if you already use yt-dlp for downloading and want a single player to handle the output.

Platform Coverage

VLC runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit builds. macOS users from Monterey through Sequoia are covered, with native Apple Silicon support available via the VLC for Mac build.

Android users can download VLC for Android for the same codec-free experience on phones and tablets.

What's New in VLC 3.0.23

The latest release addresses WebVTT subtitle positioning accuracy, improves audio codec metadata display for lossless formats including FLAC 24-bit, and extends JPEG format compatibility - useful if you work with JFIF files that other software won't open, though for full cross-app compatibility you can also convert JFIF to JPG beforehand.

When to Use a Different Tool

VLC is the right answer for most users. There are specific situations where alternatives serve better.

Power users running HDR content or advanced color pipelines may prefer MPC-BE with LAV Filters and the MPC Video Renderer. That combination delivers HDR tone mapping and D3D11 hardware decoding that VLC currently does not match.

If you want codec support system-wide - across Windows Media Player, your editing software, and every other DirectShow application - the K-Lite Codec Pack installs LAV Filters and MPC-HC together and configures everything automatically. VLC's built-in codecs only benefit VLC itself.

For users who prefer a lighter interface with similar format coverage, MPC-HC and PotPlayer are both worth testing. KMPlayer is another solid option with built-in codec support and 3D playback.

@Cris

Although the official VLC website hasn’t been updated yet, the final VLC Media Player 3.0.22 release is available on the VLC download servers, so we listed it here too, of course 😉

For months, a different version 3.0.21 has been released almost every day. VLC 4 alpha started a pretty long time ago. ~2005? +-3 y

Isn't there a better way to mark new releases?

You are right, weve added the date to the version to make it easier to track new releases. This should help provide more clarity and avoid confusion with frequent updates.

Thanks for your feedback!
