OpenAI Enters Browser Wars: ChatGPT Atlas Brings AI to Every Webpage

Text:

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a new web browser with ChatGPT built directly into the browsing experience, available now for macOS users across Free, Plus, Pro, and Business tiers.

ChatGPT Atlas Brings AI to Every Webpage

The browser features an "Ask ChatGPT" button on every webpage that opens a companion sidebar, allowing users to create summaries, ask questions, and complete tasks without switching tabs.

Key features include agent mode for Plus, Pro, and Business users, which enables ChatGPT to automate end-to-end tasks like researching meal plans and adding groceries to shopping carts, and optional browser memories that let ChatGPT remember context from visited sites to provide more personalized assistance.

The browser's new tab page serves as a starting point where users can ask questions or enter URLs to see results across chat, search links, images, videos, and news in one unified interface.

Atlas is currently available only on Mac with Windows, iOS, and Android versions coming soon, and OpenAI has made the browser available to all users rather than using an invite system like competing AI browsers.

The launch puts OpenAI in direct competition with other AI-powered browsers including The Browser Company's Dia, Perplexity's Comet, and Opera's Neon, with OpenAI leveraging its existing 800 million weekly ChatGPT users as a significant distribution advantage.

Users can download Atlas and import bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history from existing browsers during setup.
