Googlebook: An Android Laptop That Knows Your Phone

Google's new laptops run Android, not ChromeOS - and the headline feature is that they carry on exactly where your phone left off.

Pre-orders for the first Googlebooks opened on September 21.

They reach US shops on October 4 and the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia a day later.

Every model starts with 16GB of RAM, and Google promises ten years of updates. The Acer is the only one that folds back into a tablet.

The phone trick

Continue On moves what you were doing between phone and laptop. Close Gmail, Docs or Chrome on one and open the laptop, and it offers to pick up at the same spot.

Cast My Apps goes further. Apps installed only on your phone open in their own windows on the laptop, without installing them there.

Both need an Android 17 phone signed in to the same Google account. On the phone, the switch lives under Settings, Google, All services, Cross-device services, Continue activity.

Why it matters for your media apps

Because Googlebook runs Android, the Play Store works properly, and Google is badging the apps that behave well on a big screen.

That puts the Android players you already know on a laptop. VLC for Android carries its own decoders, so MKV files and odd audio tracks play without hunting for anything else - a sensible first install.
