VidCoder 12.13 Final

5 from 1 Reviews

VidCoder is a free video conversion tool built on the HandBrake encoding library.

It provides a streamlined interface for converting video files and ripping DVDs and Blu-ray discs without requiring HandBrake to be installed separately.

Key Features

VidCoder supports batch processing, allowing you to queue multiple video files for encoding simultaneously.

The drag-and-drop interface simplifies file management, while advanced users can customize video parameters including codec selection, framerate, quality settings, and audio track configuration.

Output formats include MP4 and MKV containers with support for H.264/x264 and H.265/HEVC video encoding.

Hardware Acceleration Support

Version 12 introduces enhanced hardware encoding capabilities.

VidCoder supports NVIDIA NVEnc with an increased simultaneous device cap from 3 to 5, Intel QSV (Quick Sync Video) with hyperencode and load balancing, and Media Foundation hardware decoding.

The new Hardware tab in Global Settings displays all available encoders on your system, making it easier to optimize encoding for your specific hardware configuration.

DVD and Blu-ray Ripping

While VidCoder excels at disc ripping, it cannot bypass CSS, AACS, or BD+ encryption found on commercial discs. For encrypted content, you'll need additional software like AnyDVD or DVDFab to remove protection first.

Alternatively, MakeMKV can extract content from protected discs directly - see our guide on using MakeMKV for free.

Working with Output Files

Encoded videos can be edited and managed using MKVToolNix for MKV container manipulation.

For playback, VLC Media Player handles most formats natively, while the K-Lite Codec Pack ensures system-wide compatibility.

If you encounter HEVC playback issues, install the HEVC Video Extensions or follow our VLC HEVC playback guide.

Alternative Video Encoders

Users requiring more advanced encoding control may consider StaxRip for extensive filter and codec options, Shutter Encoder for broader format support, or XMedia Recode for video passthrough capabilities.

The Simple x264/x265 Launcher offers a straightforward GUI for direct encoder access, while MeGUI provides comprehensive DVD-to-AVC workflows.

What's New in Version 12.13

  • First stable v12 release with Hardware tab showing available encoders
  • QSV hyperencode implementation with load balancing support
  • NVEnc device cap increased to 5 simultaneous encodes
  • Configurable hardware decoding for Media Foundation
  • Updated HandBrake library to version 1.10.2
  • Fixed audio track naming, subtitle handling, and queue item controls

VidCoder delivers reliable video conversion with an accessible interface for users who want HandBrake's power without command-line complexity.

Finally I have found what I have spent about 2 months looking for.

An encoder that will :-

1. Read Vob files with AC3 audio
2. Will Batch encode multiple files at once (with out having to set each up one by one!)
3. Has AC3 pass through
4. Dose not mess up the Image size or aspect.
5. Give amazing results
6. It simple to use and easy to tweak.

Thank you to the vid coder team, you have made me very happy. Keep up the good work. and remember if it ain't broken don't try and fix it!
