No longer developed

GeForce Experience is no longer updated by its developer - the last version here is from 2024. It may still run, but it gets no fixes for newer Windows versions or formats.

Maintained alternatives that may do the same job:

GeForce Experience is retired, and the NVIDIA App now does everything it did.

NVIDIA ended support for it when the NVIDIA App left beta on 12 November 2024.

Since driver 566.36, NVIDIA's driver package installs the new app in its place.

Version 3.28.0.417 was the last build, and we keep it here as an archive. If you have a GeForce card and want driver updates, game settings and screen recording, install the NVIDIA App instead, which does not make you sign in.

What GeForce Experience Did

For most of the 2010s it was the app that came with every GeForce driver. It bundled five jobs into one window:

  • Driver updates - told you when a new Game Ready driver was out and installed it.
  • Game optimization - scanned your games and applied suggested graphics settings for your hardware in one click.
  • ShadowPlay - recorded gameplay, kept an instant replay buffer and streamed with little performance cost.
  • Highlights - saved key moments automatically in supported games.
  • Ansel and Game Filters - a free-camera photo mode and real-time colour filters.

Its biggest annoyance was the compulsory NVIDIA account sign-in, which was the main reason many people avoided it.

Where Each Feature Went

In GeForce Experience In the NVIDIA App
Driver updates Drivers tab, with no account needed
Game optimization Graphics tab, with global and per-game settings
ShadowPlay and instant replay Overlay (Alt+Z), Record and Instant Replay, now with AV1 recording up to 120 fps
Highlights Overlay sidebar
Ansel and Game Filters Photo Mode and Game Filters in the overlay
Rewards, GeForce Now, Broadcast Home tab

A few advanced options, such as NVIDIA Surround, still live only in the NVIDIA Control Panel, so keep that installed too.

Should You Still Install the Old Version?

Almost certainly not. It gets no fixes, and anything that depends on NVIDIA's servers, such as sign-in and driver checks, can stop working without warning.

The archive is here for people repairing an older setup who need the exact program they had before. For a working PC today, the NVIDIA App is the better tool in every way that matters.

How to Switch to the NVIDIA App

  1. Download the NVIDIA App and run the installer. It takes over from GeForce Experience.
  2. If GeForce Experience is still listed under Settings, Apps, uninstall it there.
  3. Open the Graphics tab to reapply optimized settings to your games.
  4. Press Alt+Z in a game to set up recording and instant replay again.

Our news story on NVIDIA replacing GeForce Experience covers the move in more detail.

Drivers Without Any App

You do not need either app to keep your drivers current. Download the Game Ready driver for gaming or the Studio driver for video and photo work.

Other Tools That Cover the Same Jobs

For recording and streaming with more control than any overlay, OBS Studio is free and uses the same NVENC encoder on your card. For frame rate counters, temperatures and fan curves, MSI Afterburner is the usual choice.

And if your PC is not up to a new game at all, GeForce Now streams it from NVIDIA's servers instead.

Quick Questions

Is GeForce Experience discontinued?

Yes. NVIDIA ended support in November 2024 and replaced it with the NVIDIA App. Version 3.28.0.417 was the last build.

Does the NVIDIA App need an NVIDIA account?

No. Driver updates and settings work without signing in. An account is only needed for extras such as rewards.

Where did ShadowPlay go?

Into the NVIDIA App overlay. Press Alt+Z in a game to find Record, Instant Replay and Highlights.

Do I still need the NVIDIA Control Panel?

For now, yes, if you use advanced options such as NVIDIA Surround. NVIDIA plans to fold the rest of it into the NVIDIA App.
