If your microphone or webcam works in one app but not in OBS, Zoom or Audacity, the usual culprit is one Windows 11 switch: Let desktop apps access your microphone (or camera).

Turn it on, restart the app, and most people are done in under two minutes.
If that doesn't do it, the checks below go from most likely to least likely.
The 2-Minute Fix: Check Windows Privacy Settings
Windows 11 has three switches for each device and all of them must be on - here is the microphone version, and the camera works exactly the same way.
- Open the microphone settings. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Turn on Microphone access. This is the master switch at the top - if it's off, no app can hear you.
- Turn on Let apps access your microphone. This covers apps from the Microsoft Store, and you can switch them one by one in the list below it.
- Turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. This is the one that matters for OBS Studio, Audacity, Zoom, Discord and most programs you download from the web.
- Restart the app. Close it fully, then open it again so it picks up the new permission.
For a webcam, repeat the same steps under Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. If your webcam has a built-in microphone, you may need to allow both.
Why your app isn't in the list:
Microsoft says desktop apps "won't appear" in the per-app list - only Store apps do. Desktop programs share one switch, and you can't turn them off one at a time yet.
Still Silent? Check the Input Device
Windows may be listening to the wrong microphone, such as a webcam mic instead of your headset. Go to Settings > System > Sound and, under Input, pick the right device in Choose a device for speaking or recording.
- Test it. Select the arrow next to the device, then Start test under Microphone test, and speak.
- Check the level. Drag the Input volume slider up if the bar barely moves.
- Check the app too. In OBS, open Settings > Audio and pick your mic under Mic/Auxiliary Audio - in Audacity, check the recording device.

Webcam Only: Shutters, Keys and "In Use" Errors
- Look for a physical switch. Many laptops have a sliding shutter on the camera, a switch on the side, or a camera key used with Fn - when it's off, Windows may not see a camera at all.
- Close other apps. Error 0xA00F4243 means another app is already using the camera - close Teams, Zoom or your browser and try again.
- Test with the Camera app. Open Start > Camera - if the preview works there, the problem is inside your other app's settings.
Fix It in Your App
Once Windows lets the app in, the app still has to pick the right device. In OBS Studio, add a Video Capture Device or Audio Input Capture source and choose your hardware from the list.
In Audacity, choose your microphone as the recording device before you press Record. Zoom and Discord each have their own audio and video settings page with a device drop-down and a test button.
Coming to Windows 11:
Windows Central reports that Microsoft is testing per-app switches for desktop apps too, so you could block one program without blocking the rest. It isn't in the regular version of Windows 11 yet.
Quick questions
Why does my mic work in Teams but not in OBS?
Each app picks its own input device. Check the Audio Input Capture source in OBS and make sure it points at the same microphone Teams uses.
Why is OBS or Zoom not listed under microphone permissions?
Desktop apps don't get their own entry. They are all covered by the Let desktop apps access your microphone switch.
The Microphone access switch is greyed out - what now?
An administrator controls it, which is common on work and school PCs. Ask your IT team, or sign in with an administrator account on a home PC.
Does turning off camera access stop Windows Hello face sign-in?
No. Microsoft says Windows Hello can still use the camera to sign you in when app access is turned off.
My webcam says it is in use by another app - which one?
Close video apps one by one, starting with Teams, Zoom, Discord and your browser. If that fails, restart the PC to release the camera.
The bottom line
Most of the time, a silent mic or black webcam in a downloaded app is the Let desktop apps access switch. Turn it on, pick the right device, and get back to recording.
