MPC Audio Renderer is the free DirectShow audio output filter built into MPC-BE by the MPC-BE team, sending audio straight to your sound card in its original bit depth and sample rate instead of through the Windows mixer, and it is free with no paid tier and no bundled extras.
MPC Audio Renderer is the audio output stage from MPC-BE, and its whole job is handing your sound card the audio exactly as it came off the disc or out of the file.
No Windows mixer, no resampling to whatever your desktop happens to be set to, no volume maths applied on the way past.
It is free, it is about 1MB, and it works with any DirectShow player, not just the two it was written for.
What It Actually Does
Windows normally blends every sound on the machine into one stream, converts that stream to whatever sample rate the Sound control panel is set to, and sends the result to your speakers. A 24-bit 96kHz album played that way often arrives as 16-bit 48kHz, quietly downgraded before it ever reaches the hardware.
This renderer takes a different route. In WASAPI exclusive mode it claims the audio device for the length of playback and sets it to match the file, so the bits your player decoded are the bits your DAC receives.
The practical ceiling is whatever your audio device reports as supported rather than a limit in the filter, and 24-bit 192kHz is common on modern USB DACs. When the hardware can only take 16-bit, the renderer applies dithering on the way down instead of simply truncating, which is the difference between a clean quiet passage and a gritty one.
Where to Select It
Run the installer, then pick the renderer inside your player - installing it alone changes nothing until you do.
In MPC-BE it is Options > Audio, in the audio renderer dropdown. In MPC-HC the same setting lives under View > Options > Playback > Output.

Exclusive Mode or Shared Mode
Exclusive mode is the one people install this filter for, and it is also the one that surprises them. While a film is playing, nothing else on the computer can make a sound - no notification pings, no browser video, no voice chat.
That silence is the feature working, not a fault. If you watch films on a machine you also use for other things, shared mode keeps everything else audible and still skips most of the damage the default renderer does.
Shared mode is also the one to use if you have turned on Windows Sonic for headphones, since exclusive mode bypasses the spatial processing entirely.
The Rest of the Chain
A renderer only handles the last step. Something still has to open the file and decode it, which is where LAV Filters comes in, and if you want the video side handled just as carefully, MPC Video Renderer is its opposite number.

Who Should Look Elsewhere
The tell is simple: if your complaint about your audio is that it sounds thin, or too quiet, or that dialogue is buried under the score, this is the wrong tool. It changes nothing about the sound by design, and a filter whose entire purpose is to not touch anything cannot boost, compress or equalise it.
- You want an equalizer, bass boost or room correction - FFDShow carries a full audio processing chain.
- You want fine-grained AC3 and DTS control such as per-channel levels or dynamic range compression - that is AC3 Filter territory.

- Your audio crackles or drops out in every application, not just your player - fix the driver first, usually with Realtek HD Audio Codecs.
What Changed in 1.9.1
The renderer ships as part of MPC-BE and takes its version number from the player, so 1.9.1 is the build from the MPC-BE 1.9.1 release of 8 August 2026. That release changed splitters, decoders and the player interface, and left the audio renderer untouched.
The last round of renderer work landed in 1.9.0, in June 2026: stricter validation of incoming audio formats, faster detection of which formats your device accepts in exclusive mode, a new "Keep audio device active when paused" setting that stops some DACs clicking on every pause, and fixes for crashes and freezes.
If you are coming from a 1.8.9 build, the pause-clicking fix is the one you will notice.
Before You Blame the Renderer
Plenty of "bad audio" turns out to be a bad file. If one album sounds wrong and everything else is fine, run a track through our free online audio converter and see whether the source is what you think it is.

Do I need MPC-BE to use it?

Why did my other programs go silent?
That is WASAPI exclusive mode doing its job - it locks the audio device while your player has it. Switch the renderer to shared mode if you need notifications and browser sound during playback.
Does it work on Windows 11?
Yes, on Windows 11 and Windows 10, in both 32-bit and 64-bit players.
Is this the same thing as MPC Video Renderer?
No, they are separate filters from the same project. One handles the picture and one handles the sound, and installing both is a common setup.
Will it make my speakers sound better?
It removes a stage that can degrade the sound rather than adding anything. On onboard laptop speakers you will likely hear nothing at all; on a decent DAC and headphones the difference on high-resolution files is easier to pick out.
