K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is the largest variant of the K-Lite family, adding VFW and ACM encoder codecs, GraphStudioNext and a few rare-format source filters on top of the Full pack, none of which change what the pack can play.

Mega is the biggest K-Lite variant, and almost everything it adds is encoder codecs that playback never touches.

If you are not compressing AVI files in VirtualDub or something else from that era, Standard is the variant you want.

Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 19.8.5 - 65.2 MB, free, Windows 7 through 11.

What Mega Adds Over Full

Six things, and only one of them affects how files play.

  • VFW video codecs - x264 revision 2851, XviD 1.3.7, Lagarith 1.3.27 and huffyuv 2.1.1, for encoding rather than decoding.
  • ACM audio codecs - AC3ACM 2.2 and LAME 3.99.5, the audio equivalent. LAME is not installed by default.
  • GraphStudioNext 0.7.3.12 - a tool for building and testing DirectShow filter graphs. This is the one people mistakenly expect to find in Full.
  • Bass Audio Source - decodes OptimFrog and Tracker audio, both genuinely rare.
  • MPC Image Source - lets DirectShow applications open image formats.
  • ffdshow video and audio processors - legacy post-processing filters, not installed by default and not recommended by the developer.

Everything else is identical to Full: same player, same decoders, same renderers, same tools, same versions.

What VFW and ACM Codecs Are Actually For

They are an encoding format from the era before DirectShow, used by programs that compress video into AVI files. VirtualDub is the classic example, along with older capture and screen-recording tools.

They do nothing for playback. Installing them will not make a single extra file play, because the pack already decodes everything through LAV Filters in every variant.

This is worth being blunt about, because "bigger pack, better playback" is the assumption that sends most people to this page.

It Will Not Help Adobe Premiere or Vegas

Codec Guide states this directly, and it is the single most common disappointment with Mega. The pack does not expand what professional editors can import.

Modern editors either use their own internal decoders or accept only Media Foundation codecs, and the K-Lite codecs are DirectShow and VFW. Different plumbing entirely.

If your editor rejects a file, the fix is usually to convert it first. HandBrake will turn almost anything into an editor-friendly MP4, and our free HEVC encoder comparison covers the current options if you need something more specific.

What You Get for Playback

The same excellent set as the other variants, which is why Mega is a perfectly good choice even if you never touch the encoders.

  • MPC-HC 2.7.4.0 as the player.
  • LAV Filters 0.82-4 for decoding and splitting, with hardware acceleration.
  • MPC Video Renderer 0.10.6.2555 and madVR 0.92.17, so you can pick your renderer.
  • DirectVobSub 3.2.0.810 for subtitles and Icaros 3.3.6 for Explorer thumbnails.
  • Codec Tweak Tool 6.7.7 and MediaInfo Lite 26.05.

Do You Actually Need Mega?

  • You encode AVI files in VirtualDub or a similar tool that asks for a VFW codec.
  • You build or debug DirectShow filter graphs and want GraphStudioNext.
  • You have OptimFrog or Tracker audio files, which is a short list of people.
  • You want everything in one installer and do not care about 10 MB.

If none of those apply, Standard plays exactly the same files in 39.2 MB. Basic does too, without a player, in 21.3 MB.

The main K-Lite Codec Pack page compares the family if you want the overview first.

What Changed in 19.8.5

  • MPC-HC updated to 2.7.4.0, with a new libass option for subtitle rendering.
  • LAV Filters updated to 0.82.0-4.
  • MPC Video Renderer updated to 0.10.6.2555, and it is now the default renderer on more older systems.
  • VSFilter now loads only for a known list of applications, which stops it interfering with programs that never wanted it.
  • Removed the redundant Xvid decoder filter and the obsolete Haali Video Renderer.
  • Icaros updated to 3.3.6, MediaInfo Lite to 26.05, Codec Tweak Tool to 6.7.7.

The renderer default change is the one that produces support questions. If video stutters or the colours look wrong after updating, open MPC-HC, then Options, then Playback and Output, and try a different renderer.

Already running a K-Lite variant? Run the new installer over the top. The separate update pack sits at 19.8.0 because none was published for 19.8.5.

Windows Support

Current versions run on Windows 7, 8.x, 10 and 11, with 32-bit and 64-bit codecs in the same installer.

Windows XP and Vista are no longer supported. Version 13.8.5 was the last build compatible with XP, and it is a 2018-era pack with 2018-era decoders, so treat it as an archive item rather than a recommendation.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

If you want a player that carries its own decoders and changes nothing else on the system, VLC and MPC-BE both do that.

If the app that cannot open your file is Photos or the modern Media Player, no K-Lite variant will help. Those use Media Foundation, so you need Media Foundation codecs instead.

The tell that Mega is the wrong choice: you picked it because it was the largest. That is the most common reason people install it, and it is not a reason.

Other packs are in our codec packs section, and our Codec Finder identifies what a specific file needs.

Quick questions

Does Mega play more formats than Standard?

No. All four variants decode through the same LAV Filters, so they play exactly the same files. Mega adds encoders, tools and a couple of rare-format source filters.

Will Mega let Adobe Premiere import my video?

No. Professional editors use their own internal codecs or Media Foundation, not the DirectShow and VFW codecs in this pack. Convert the file instead.

What is a VFW codec, in plain terms?

An older Windows codec format used for compressing video into AVI files. Programs like VirtualDub still ask for them. They play no part in normal playback.

Is Mega slower or heavier than the smaller variants?

Not in use. The extra components sit unused unless a program calls for them, and ffdshow is not even installed by default.

Which variant has GraphStudioNext?

Mega only, despite what a lot of pages claim about Full. If you want that tool, this is the download.

Does it still work on Windows XP?

Not the current version. 13.8.5 was the last XP-compatible build, and it is old enough that its decoders predate most modern formats.
