ProgDVB turns a Windows PC into a television, pulling live channels from a tuner card, a satellite dish, a cable feed or an IPTV playlist.

The free Standard edition covers watching, and recording belongs to the paid Professional edition.

That split is the most useful thing to know before you install, because it is where most write-ups of this program go wrong.

What ProgDVB Actually Does

This is a player for live broadcast rather than for files on your drive, so it expects a signal source.

It speaks DVB-S and DVB-S2 for satellite, DVB-C for cable, DVB-T and DVB-T2 for a rooftop or indoor aerial, plus ATSC and ISDB-T for North America, Japan and much of Latin America. It also reads IPTV and OTT streams and ships with a built-in list of internet TV and radio stations, which the developer now puts at around 8,000 entries.

The installer quietly gives you two programs that share one channel list and one settings folder.

ProgDVB is the classic interface, dense with menus and options, while ProgTV is the newer one built for big screens and remote controls. The developer suggests ProgTV on Windows 10 and later, and you can switch between the two without configuring anything twice.

Beyond the tuning, the useful parts are the electronic program guide, which reads schedule data from the broadcast itself or from an XMLTV or JTV file, plus teletext, subtitles, a 10-band equalizer and skins for both interfaces.

What the Free Edition Leaves Out

The download on this page is the Standard build, and it is free with no time limit. Professional is a separate paid licence with a 21-day trial, and it holds the features people most often assume are included.

At the time of writing the developer asks around 25 euro for a ProgDVB Professional licence, or about 35 euro bundled with ProgTV. If recording live TV is the reason you are here, budget for that or look at the free alternatives further down.

The Codec Catch Behind Half the Complaints

Both editions bundle an MPEG-2 decoder licensed from Elecard, and that component is shareware even inside the free build. After 21 days it asks to be registered, and until you either register it or point ProgDVB at a different decoder, standard-definition channels can stop showing a picture.

LAV Filters is the lightest option and is what most modern Windows players use under the hood. K-Lite Codec Pack does the same job with more hand-holding and a configuration tool.

For 4K and HEVC channels on Windows 10 and 11 you may also need the HEVC Video Extension, which the system uses rather than anything ProgDVB installs itself.

What You Need Before You Install

• Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 or newer. Windows 10 and 11 already have it, older machines usually do not.
• A signal source. A tuner card or USB stick, a satellite receiver, or an m3u playlist from an IPTV provider - without one of those there is nothing to tune.
• The 32-bit build unless you have a reason. The developer's own advice is that the x64 version only sees x64 codecs and plugins, so the 32-bit installer is the easier setup on any Windows.
• Current drivers for your tuner. This is the single most common cause of crashes, and it is not something the player can fix.

The vendor lists Windows 7, 8 and 10 as supported, and names 7.35.9 as the last build for XP and Vista.

About the Reviews on This Page

ProgDVB sits at 2.17 out of 5 here, and the low scores say "unstable" without saying much else. The most detailed review on the page is a five-star one from someone who ran it for years and traced his own blue screens to a USB DVB-T receiver driver that had no working Windows 10 version, not to the player.

That matches the general shape of the problem. A tuner application is only as stable as the driver underneath it, and DVB-T sticks sold a decade ago are the usual culprits.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

The tell is simple: if you have no tuner hardware and no provider playlist, ProgDVB has nothing to show you and a normal file player will serve you better.

• Video files on your own drive. VLC Media Player and MPC-HC are the usual picks.
• Something lighter or more configurable. MPC-BE and PotPlayer cover the same ground with different interfaces.
• Channels from an m3u playlist. TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro are built for exactly that.
• An Android TV box or a remote control. OTT Player and the rest of the IPTV players category are designed for the sofa rather than the desk.
• Free recording. Kodi with a PVR add-on does live TV and recording without a licence fee, at the cost of a longer setup.
