Audacity is a free audio editor and recorder. You can record sounds, play sounds, import and export WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, and MP3 files, and more.
Use it to edit your sounds using Cut, Copy and Paste (with unlimited Undo), mix tracks together, or apply effects to your recordings.
It also has a built-in amplitude envelope editor, a customizable spectrogram mode and a frequency analysis window for audio analysis applications.
Built-in effects include Echo, Change Tempo, and Noise Removal, and it also supports VST and LADSPA plug-in effects.
Changes in Audacity 2.0.3:
* Bug fixes for:
- Crash using Undo whilst time-shifting a track.
- Crash using Repair if the selection extended into an empty track.
- Export Multiple didn't prevent export if there was no audio or all audio was muted. This allowed export of small invalid files.

Great program that i have been using for the last year or two. Easy to use, with heaps of effects.
The envolope tool is brilliant.
Hats off to the programmers, and anyone affiliated with making this must-have program.

What a great program! The ease of use, the many functions.. You'll be amazed!
If you're just planning on having fun (karoke, recording hilarious songs and sending them to your friends etc), or are in need of editing your old (or new) audio files, this is it!
