Microsoft Edge Will Soon Merge PDFs and Rearrange Pages for Free - What to Use Until Then

Be the first to comment

Microsoft Edge is getting free, built-in tools to merge PDF files and delete, rotate or reorder their pages, with a release planned for January 2027.

Loose paper sheets being gathered by a binder clip, two turned at an angle, above the title Merge, rotate, reorder, free in your browser

Microsoft added the feature to its Microsoft 365 roadmap on 20 October. It's marked "in development", so the date could still move.

Need to combine two PDFs today? Skip to the free option below.

What Edge Will Be Able to Do

  • Merge PDFs. Combine the PDF you have open with others open in Edge tabs or saved on your PC.
  • Rearrange pages. Drag pages into a new order, rotate them, or delete the ones you don't need.
  • Pull pages out. Pick a few pages and save them as their own PDF.
  • Keep your originals. Everything is saved as a new file, and your original PDFs stay untouched.
  • Stay on your PC. Microsoft says the work happens on your device, not in the cloud.

That covers the jobs most people need - sticking a signed form onto a contract, or removing a blank page from a scan.

What Edge Can Already Do With PDFs

Microsoft Edge already opens PDFs and lets you highlight, draw, add notes, search and have the page read aloud.

It has a Rotate button too, but today it only turns the view. It doesn't save the change.

What's not coming.

This update doesn't edit the text inside a PDF, shrink file size, read scanned text or add passwords. For those jobs you still need a dedicated PDF app.

Merge PDFs for Free Today

PdfCraft is a free, open-source PDF app that already does everything Edge is promising. It merges, splits, rotates, deletes and reorders pages.

  • Install PdfCraft and open your first PDF.
  • Use Combine to add the other files, then drag the pages into the order you want.
  • Save it as a new PDF. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.

Good to know.

PdfCraft is still an early-stage app. It's strong at page jobs like these, and weaker at editing text already on the page.

Already use Adobe Acrobat Reader? It's great for reading, filling in and signing PDFs, but combining files is a paid Acrobat feature.

Quick questions

When can I merge PDFs in Microsoft Edge?

Microsoft is aiming for January 2027. The feature is still in development, so it may arrive a little earlier or later.

Will it cost anything?

No. It's being built into Edge's free PDF reader. Businesses get a setting to switch it off.

Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?

Microsoft says the merging and page changes happen on your device, and your original files aren't changed.

Can Edge edit the text inside a PDF?

Not with this update. It handles whole pages - moving, rotating, deleting and combining them.

How do I combine PDFs for free right now?

Use a free app such as PdfCraft. Open the first file, use Combine to add the others, put the pages in order and save.

Edge will handle simple PDF merging and page tidying for free from January - until then, a free desktop app does the same job today.

Grab PdfCraft for the jobs you can't put off, or tell us which PDF tool you use.
