Pick the right installer

This is where most installs go wrong, so it is worth ten seconds.

For a PC running an app on its own, install this runtime plus the matching .NET Runtime. The ASP.NET Core installer does not include the base runtime.
For a server running IIS, use the Hosting Bundle instead. It includes the .NET Runtime, the ASP.NET Core Runtime and the IIS module in one installer, from Microsoft's .NET 10 page.
For a windowed desktop app, you want the .NET Desktop Runtime, not this one.

Installed IIS after .NET? Run the Hosting Bundle again, or choose Repair. It only adds its IIS module if IIS is already there when it installs.

Which version?

Install the major version the app was built for. Versions sit side by side, so adding 10 does not remove 8 or 9.

10.0.13, released on 13 October 2026, is a security update, and .NET 10 is supported until November 2028. .NET 8 and .NET 9 stop receiving updates on 10 November 2026, so plan to move apps off them.

.NET 10 is officially supported on Windows 11, Windows Server 2012 and later, and the Enterprise, LTSC and IoT editions of Windows 10.

Quick questions

Do I need this to browse websites?

No. It is only needed on the computer that runs an ASP.NET Core app, not on the computers that visit it.

IIS shows error 500.19 or 500.31. What now?

Both usually mean the Hosting Bundle or the right runtime version is missing. Install the Hosting Bundle for the app's .NET version, then restart IIS.

Does it include the .NET Runtime?

Not this installer. Add the .NET Runtime of the same version, or use the Hosting Bundle, which has both.

Is it free?

Yes. ASP.NET Core is free and open source, published by Microsoft.
