MetatOGGer is a free music tag editor for Windows that can identify a track by listening to it, so even files with no artist, no album and no title get their tags, cover art and a tidy filename back.
A folder full of "Track 01.mp3" and "Unknown Artist" is the kind of mess that no amount of clicking will fix by hand. MetatOGGer, from the French developer Luminescence Software, exists for exactly that folder.
It reads the tags your files already have, and when there are none worth reading, it listens to the audio itself and works out what the song is. It is completely free, with no paid version waiting behind a button.
What Tags Are, And Why Yours Are Probably Broken
A tag is the little block of text stored inside an audio file that tells your player the artist, album, track number, year and genre. It is what makes your library sortable.
Rip a CD with the wrong settings, grab a file from a forum, or restore an old backup, and that block ends up empty or filled with nonsense. Your player then shows a wall of "Unknown Artist" folders, and search stops working.
Most free tag editors, including the excellent Mp3tag and TagScanner, fix this by reading clues from the filename or by looking up the CD in an online database. That works well when the filename is "Radiohead - Creep.mp3". It does nothing at all when the filename is "audio_04.mp3".
It Identifies Songs By Listening To Them
This is the reason to pick MetatOGGer over the alternatives. It uses AcoustID, a fingerprinting system that turns the actual sound of a track into a short numeric signature, then matches that signature against a public database of millions of recordings. The filename does not matter. The existing tags do not matter. If the recording is in the database, MetatOGGer will name it.
Once it has a match, it pulls the full details from MusicBrainz, a community-run music encyclopaedia, and grabs album artwork from the Cover Art Archive. You get artist, album, track number, year and a cover image written straight into the file, in one pass, across as many files as you throw at it.
It is not magic. Live bootlegs, home recordings, obscure regional pressings and heavily re-encoded rips can all come back blank or wrong, and a fingerprint match on a song that appears on eight different compilations may pick the wrong album. MetatOGGer shows you what it found before it writes anything, which is the part worth paying attention to.
The Offline Database Is The Speed Trick
MetatOGGer can download a local copy of the MusicBrainz catalogue, roughly 3.5 million albums, and keep it on your drive.
Lookups then happen on your own machine instead of over the internet, which matters enormously when you are tagging thousands of files: no rate limits, no waiting on a server, no stalling halfway through a batch.
Recent versions added full-text search across that local copy, so you can type an album name normally instead of learning database syntax.
The trade-off is disk space and the occasional refresh to keep the copy current. If you only ever tag a handful of files, you can skip it and query online instead.
Renaming And Filing, Done Once For The Whole Library
Tags are only half the job. MetatOGGer can also rename every file and rebuild your folder structure from those tags, using a pattern you define once. Tell it you want Artist / Album (Year) / 01 - Title and it will move, copy or link thousands of files into that shape without you touching a single folder.
It works in the other direction too. If your filenames already carry the information but the tags are empty, it can read the filename and path and write those pieces back into the tags. Newer builds also carry along sidecar files, so a matching .lrc lyrics file follows its song when the song gets renamed or moved.
Finding The Duplicates You Forgot About
Because MetatOGGer already knows what each file sounds like, it can spot duplicates that a file-size comparison would miss entirely. The same song ripped once to FLAC and once to a 128 kbps MP3 is two completely different files on disk, but the fingerprints match, so MetatOGGer flags them as the same recording and lets you keep the better copy. Anyone who has merged two old music backups will get some money's worth here, and the price was zero to begin with.
Which File Formats It Handles
MetatOGGer reads and writes tags for MP3, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Opus, Windows Media Audio including its lossless and professional variants, and M4A files holding either AAC or Apple Lossless. For MP3 it supports the ID3 v1, v2.2, v2.3 and v2.4 tag standards, so files written by older software still open correctly. Tag handling is built on TagLib, the same open-source library behind a long list of respected music apps, and since version 7.5 it can edit files larger than 2 GB, which matters for full-album FLAC rips and long recordings.

Editing By Hand When The Automation Gets It Wrong
Everything automatic is optional. The main window is a spreadsheet-style grid where you can sort, filter and group your files, select a batch of rows, press F2 and type one value into all of them at once. Tags you have enabled for writing appear in bold so you do not wipe something by accident, and every session can be saved and picked up later.
Underneath that sits a C# scripting engine for anything the buttons do not cover. This is a programming language, and it is entirely skippable, but if you have a rule like "strip the word Remastered from every album title recorded before 1990" you can write it once and run it over the whole library. Most people will never open this panel. The people who need it will not find it in many free taggers.
There Is A Player Built In
MetatOGGer includes basic playback so you can confirm that "Track 07" really is the song the fingerprint says it is, without alt-tabbing to another program. It is a checking tool, not a listening tool. For actual listening, keep foobar2000, MusicBee, AIMP or Winamp where they are. MetatOGGer cleans the library, they play it.
What You Need To Run It
MetatOGGer runs on Windows 10 64-bit or later. Since version 7.0 it has been a 64-bit application with the .NET runtime bundled inside the installer, so there is no separate framework to hunt down first, and support for Windows 7 ended when the app moved to the modern Windows audio engine. The interface is built with Windows Presentation Foundation, Microsoft's vector-based display technology, which is why it stays sharp on high-resolution and scaled displays instead of going fuzzy.
The developer offers a standard .exe installer, which is the one to take because it brings its own dependencies, and an .msi package for people deploying it across managed machines. The program is available in English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Dutch, Chinese and Russian, and contains no adware or bundled extras.
How It Compares To The Other Free Taggers
Mp3tag is faster to learn and the better pick if your files already have decent tags and you just want to tidy them. TagScanner is strong on renaming and filename-to-tag conversion. Kid3 is the cross-platform choice. MediaMonkey and MusicBee combine tagging with a full library and player. AudioShell adds tag editing straight into Windows Explorer for quick single-file fixes.
MetatOGGer's specific advantage is the fingerprint plus offline-database combination. When your problem is files that have nothing to identify them, it is the free tool most likely to actually solve it. Many people end up using two: MetatOGGer to rescue the hopeless files, Mp3tag for everyday touch-ups. There is no conflict in having both, and the full media managers section lists the rest.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
Mac and Linux users are out, this is Windows only. If your library is mostly obscure, unreleased or self-recorded material, fingerprinting has nothing to match against and a straightforward manual editor will serve you better. If you want tagging bolted onto a player you already live in, MusicBee and MediaMonkey cover that. And if the files are only badly encoded rather than badly labelled, no tagger fixes audio quality, that is a job for re-ripping with Exact Audio Copy or editing in Audacity.
Getting Started Without Breaking Anything
Tagging writes changes into your actual files, so work on a copy of a small folder first until you trust the results.
- Install MetatOGGer and drag one album folder into the workspace grid.
- Run the fingerprint identification on those files and read what it proposes before accepting.
- Fix anything it got wrong by hand in the grid, then write the tags.
- Set up your renaming pattern and apply it to that same folder to confirm the folder structure comes out how you want it.
- Once the pattern is right, point it at the rest of the library.
