No longer developed

Intel Music Coder is no longer updated by its developer - the last version here is from 2004. It may still run, but it gets no fixes for newer Windows versions or formats.

Maintained alternatives that may do the same job:

Intel Music Coder is the audio codec behind the sound in some very old AVI files.

Intel made it in the 1990s for Windows' old audio codec system, and nobody has updated it since.

You probably do not need it any more - a modern player can play IMC sound on its own.

What Intel Music Coder Actually Is

IMC is a compressed audio format that Intel used alongside its Indeo video codecs. You find it in AVI files from the CD-ROM era - game cutscenes, encyclopedias, training discs and early home video.

Inside a file it shows up as audio format 0x0401. This download installs the decoder for it, imc32.acm, into Windows' Audio Compression Manager.

The symptom is always the same: the video plays but there is no sound, or an old editing program says the audio format is unknown.

The Easy Fix: a Player That Decodes IMC Itself

Modern players carry their own decoders, and IMC is one of them. Open the file in VLC Media Player or MPC-BE and the sound should simply work, with nothing else to install.

If you prefer Windows players such as Windows Media Player, LAV Filters or K-Lite Codec Pack adds the same decoder system-wide.

Old file, old video codec too? Many IMC files pair the sound with Intel's Indeo video. The players above handle both, so try them before installing the legacy Indeo codec.

When You Still Need This Codec

Only one case is left: an old 32-bit program that asks Windows for the decoder and has no decoders of its own. Classic VirtualDub and some 1990s multimedia software work that way.

The codec is 32-bit, so it only helps 32-bit programs, even on 64-bit Windows. Newer editors such as VirtualDub2 read IMC through FFmpeg and do not need it.

Keep the Sound for Good: Convert the File

The lasting fix is to convert old IMC files to a modern format such as MP4 with AAC sound. Then they play on any PC, phone or TV.

HandBrake does this with a few clicks, and FFmpeg handles a whole folder in one command.

Not Sure the Sound Is IMC?

Check the file first. GSpot or our free Codec Finder shows the audio format - IMC is listed as 0x0401.

Quick questions

Does Intel Music Coder work on Windows 11?

It installs, but only old 32-bit programs can use it. On Windows 11 the easier route is a player such as VLC or MPC-BE, which plays IMC sound without it.

Why does my old AVI play with no sound?

Its audio is in a format your player cannot decode, often IMC or another 1990s codec. Open it in VLC, or check the audio format with GSpot first.

Is Intel Music Coder still developed?

No. Intel stopped work on it long ago, and the version here is the last one. It is kept for old software that still asks for it.

Is it safe to install?

It is a small, old codec file with no extras. Still, if a modern player already plays your file, there is no reason to add it.
