Maintained alternatives that may do the same job:
Free RM to MP3 Converter turns old RealMedia files - .rm, .ra and .rmvb - into MP3.
Version 1.12 from February 2006 was the last release, and the program has not been updated since.
It can still rescue an archive of old recordings, but modern converters do it more reliably.
What It Actually Does
A step-by-step wizard takes RealMedia files and saves them as MP3, with optional AVI, MP4 or WMV output for video. It converts in batches, lets you choose bitrate, channels and sample rate, and keeps ID3 tags.
It was popular when BBC radio, internet radio and university lectures were all streamed in RealAudio, and people wanted the recordings on MP3 players.
What Goes Wrong Today
- A 'Please update to DirectX 8.1' error on Windows 10 and 11, even with current DirectX installed.
- Output files that come out far larger than expected, or as empty 1KB files.
- No fixes since 2006, so these problems stay.
On an old Windows XP machine or in a virtual machine it still works as it always did. For that case the Free RM to MP3 Converter 1.12 download is kept here unchanged.
What to Use Instead
- Pazera Free Audio Extractor - free and portable, reads RealMedia and saves MP3, AAC, FLAC and more on current Windows.
- VLC Media Player - plays RealMedia and can convert it to MP3 from its Media menu.
- FFmpeg - converts a whole folder of old recordings in one command.
Quick questions
Why does it ask me to update to DirectX 8.1?
It is a false error from the program's age, and it appears even when DirectX is current. A modern converter avoids it.
How do I convert RM files to MP3 on Windows 11?
Use Pazera Free Audio Extractor or VLC. Both read RealMedia files and save MP3 without the old program's errors.
Is Free RM to MP3 Converter still developed?
No. Version 1.12 from 2006 is the last release.
Get Pazera Free Audio Extractor, or tell us what you were converting.
User reviews (15)
When the program hit the corrupt file, it posted the error: Cannot read from file source!
Then at the bottom it said "Please update to DirectX 8.1" - I think it safe to say that the problem had nothing to do with Direct-X as it worked fine on all my other files.
