Subtitle Workshop Classic 6.3.8

Subtitle Workshop is the subtitle editor a whole generation of fansubbers learned on, and it is still alive.

The Classic edition is a free, community-maintained version built on URUSoft's original 6.0 code.

Version 6.3.8 arrived on 17 October 2026 and adds Whisper speech-to-text, so the editor can now write a first draft of the subtitles for you.

What Subtitle Workshop Actually Does

It looks like a simple text editor, but every line in it is a subtitle with a start time, an end time and its text. You fix the words, nudge the timing and watch the result on the video right away.

• Opens and saves dozens of formats - SRT, ASS and SSA, WebVTT, SUB and many older ones, plus a custom format you define yourself.
• Video preview with waveform - play the film inside the editor and see the audio as a waveform, so you can line subtitles up with speech by eye.
• Timing tools - shift everything by a delay, convert between frame rates, stretch subtitles to fit a different cut and spot lines that overlap or flash by too fast.
• Translation mode - the original and the translation side by side, line by line.
• Error checking - finds bad timing, lines that are too long and reading speeds that are too fast, then fixes them for you or lets you fix them one by one.
• Spell check - built in through Hunspell, with extra dictionaries a click away. Microsoft Word is no longer needed.

What Is New in 6.3.8

This is the biggest release in years, and most of it is about writing subtitles you do not have yet.

• Speech-to-text with Whisper - it listens to a video's dialogue and turns it into timed subtitle lines, which you then correct. Whisper JSON files can be imported and exported too.
• Offline translation with Argos Translate, an open-source translator that runs on your own PC.
• Subtitle positioning for WebVTT and ASS, so lines can sit at the top of the screen or anywhere else, plus default font, size, shadow, outline and background colours for ASS.
• Smaller touches - a changeable font for the subtitle list, dark mode when printing, a Japanese interface and updated help.

All of that makes the download much bigger than before, at about 240MB for the installer. It is still a light program to run.

Subtitle Workshop or Subtitle Edit?

This is the question most people really have. Subtitle Edit is the busier project, with a larger team, more frequent releases and a wider set of automatic tools.

Subtitle Workshop is the better fit if you already know its layout, want a simpler window with fewer panels, or work mostly on translations, where its side-by-side mode is very comfortable. Both are free, so trying the second one costs nothing.

For a quick fix to the timing of one file, the tiny Time Adjuster does the job without a full editor.

Getting the Video Preview Working

The preview window plays video through the codecs on your PC or through VLC. If a file opens with no picture, install VLC Media Player and switch the renderer to VLC, or add K-Lite Codec Pack.

The audio waveform needs the free FFmpeg tools. Subtitle Workshop offers to download them for you in Settings, under Waveform, or it can read the audio through VLC instead.

After the Subtitles Are Done

A finished SRT or ASS file can travel with the video in three ways. Keep it as a separate file with the same name as the video, and almost every player picks it up.

Or add it as a track inside an MKV with MKVToolNix, which keeps the video untouched and lets viewers switch subtitles on or off.

For a TV or phone that ignores subtitle files, burn them into the picture with VidCoder or HandBrake.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

If you only want to watch a film with subtitles, you do not need an editor at all. A good player does it for you - see which player handles subtitles best.

MPC-BE and PotPlayer both show ASS styling properly.

For older DirectShow players, DirectVobSub adds the subtitle support they lack.
