cool! works great! I was trying to view an avi that windows media player was having trouble with. Furthermore, I could not convert the file to .amv either. Installed FFDShow, now everything is working great!

Install ffdshow for all audio and video formats.
Install Matroska Splitter to open file containers like OGG, OGM, KMV, MP4.
Enjoy!

Win XP Pro SP2. Winamp 5.5, Power DVD, WMP 11.
Go back and look at Rev 1508 from 10/05/07, which was more stable than this version. After installing either Rev 1512 or this Rev, video from some AVI's, DVX and mpg2 became unplayable. Others had colors messed up. Uninstalled either 1512 or this newer version, installed 1508 returned full functionality and appropriate color.

I've been using this for donkeys years now, it's never caused any problems. I do a crap load of video encoding and again, never had any problems using FFDshow.
I've installed this on any Pc i've fixed (lots of 'em) and it doesn't cause and issues, AS LONG AS YOU REMOVE RUBBISH CODEC PACKS FIRST!!! If you don't, then you get conflicts and problems.
Directshow filters simply read the file and display what's in it, FFDshow is NOT a codec in the normal sense of Divx/Xvix codecs.
Be sure you download the version that's right for your CPU. I find the MMX version hardly ever works, probably cus MMX is old and most .. SSE is usually the way to go, unless your running an ancient system. You will find it won't even install if its the wrong version. Simply try another.

One computer of 3 accepted it Ok from the start. The rest 2 refused. It turned out to be the difference in Media Player Classic: 6.4.8.6 couldn't load FFv (ActiveX, icon in systray). 6.4.9.0 loaded it Ok.
Still the first computer runs now MP4 in many players (PowerDVD, WMP, InterVideo WinDVD), but some doesn't use FFv (Nero ShowTime, RealPlayer, QT) perhaps, not allowed in the corresponding list (Options).
The rest 2 only in MPClassic (don't know why).

I've been using FFDShow for years, but like others here, PowerDVD 7 freaks out playing avi files with it installed. Guess I use MPC to play them instead (though Nero ShowTime plays them okay).

The video decoder has problems decoding many XviD and the most of DivX5 avi files. I think the problem occurs with movies that have 23.976 fps instead of 25.000 fps. The player opens but there is a blanc screen. The slider does not move but if you double click the FFv icon on the tray and go to the Info & CPU tab you can see that the current frame runs with less than 10 fps. This problem also existed with older versions so I thought that it would have been fixed now but it is still there. Does anyone know how can I contact the author?
The audio decoder works well with any format I have tried until now. No problems at all!

When you have that, you don't need anything else.
It can enter in conflicts with any others Codecs you may have such codec packs, Nero etc...
However, you can configure every Codecs in the Interface of FFDShow, if a codec disturb you, you can simply by a few clicks disable it.
For Audio supporting its very nice, it can exploit your Sound Card, such mine is Creative X-Fi, can read at 32 Bits Audio and use your SPDIF.
For Video it recognize all, excepted for DVD.
DVD can be viewed but you can't exploit full features of DVD excepted the Audio, you can use all you need : SPDIF your internal decoding.
For X-Fi users, you can use SPDIF, your sound card will do the rest ;)
